Cinder Block Dimensions

Cinder block dimensions or concrete blocks, which can be found in the markets, can be varied. However, there are standard measurements of concrete blocks, which are similar for most countries, which we will see later.

Cinder Block Dimensions

There may be a difference of about 5mm between the commercial measurements of a concrete block (40x20x10cm) and the manufacturing measurements (for example, 49.5×19.5×9.5cm), which is important to take into account.

How Big is a Cinder Block

The main measurements of a cement block are the following:

Standard Measurements of a Concrete Block

  • 40x20x10cm block
  • 40x20x15cm blocks
  • 40x20x20cm blocks

The size of a common concrete block is 400x200mm (length x height), while the thicknesses or widths vary according to the type of block, and the main use for which it is designed.

Manufacturing Tolerances

At the same time, the total measurements (length x height x width) of a block may differ approximately ± 3 mm from the measurements specified for sale.

How big is a Cement Block in Inches?

In countries whose language is English or with Anglo-Saxon influence, block measurements can be found in inches.

Standard Measurements of a Concrete Block in Inches and Millimeters

Measurements in inches (inches)Measurements in mm
16 x 8 x 4” block400x200x100mm blocks
16 x 8 x 6” block400x200x150mm blocks
16 x 8 x 8” block400x200x200mm blocks

How long is a Concrete Block?

Mainly the length of a cinder block (standard) is 40cm (400mm).

However, we can find cement block measures 30cm or 50cm long. These block dimensions may be less practical for general masonry work, due to its great weight, less portability or less progress in the execution of the work.

The height of a standard cinder block is 19 to 20cm.

Hollow Cement Block Measurements

Within the hollow cement blocks, we find those with 2 holes and those with 3 holes. The blocks with 2 holes are usually more appropriate for the construction of partitions and interior dividing walls. The blocks with 3 holes are more resistant, have a larger support area and can cost a little more

Solid Cinder Block Dimensions

Another of the types of blocks (also called concrete bricks), widely used in HOUSE DESIGN and construction, are solid blocks, which considerably increase the resistance of load-bearing walls.

The main disadvantages of solid blocks come from their weight. Therefore, it is more difficult to carry out masonry and construction work with them.

In turn, they increase the dead weight or permanent loads of the work, and are more expensive, since they involve a greater amount of cement and aggregate for their manufacture.

Perforated Cinder Block Dimensions

This type of block presents various advantages, since it combines the properties of hollow and solid blocks, and includes acoustic characteristics.

Without being solid blocks, they have great resistance to compression and support area. Although they may be more expensive, they are a good option, among the MATERIALS TO BUILD A ROOM.

Bearing Concrete Block Measurements, Loading Walls

In some countries, they are differentiated by the nomenclature of Grade A, Grade B and Grade C , with grade A being the one with the best quality and grade C the one with the least benefits.

Mortar (cement and sand) or concrete (cement, sand and gravel or granite) blocks can reach resistances of 70 kg/cm 2 (7.0MPa) and even higher depending on the thickness of the block, the water-cement ratio, the compaction in its elaboration, and the curing conditions.

The same in BRICK walls as in concrete block walls , the increase in the resistance of the mortar (and its quality of elaboration) favorably affect the ultimate resistance of a wall.

Concrete Block Measures by Countries

Following, measurements of concrete blocks in different countries are shown. This can be useful, for example, if we want to calculate HOW MANY BAGS OF CEMENT ARE NEEDED TO BUILD 1000 BLOCKS WALLS .
